Chennai's shrine :San Thome Basilica

A huge old church which is beautifully set against the marina beach as a backdrop. The church painted in white looks regal when lit up during christmas.

San Thome Basilica is a Roman Catholic (Latin Rite) minor basilica in Santhome, in the city of Chennai (Madras), India. It was built in the 16th century by Portuguese explorers. In 1893, it was rebuilt as a church with the status of a cathedral by the British. The British version still stands today. It was designed in Neo-Gothic style, favoured by British architects in the late 19th century.

There are only 3 churches in the world that is built on top of the tomb apostles. And the San Thome Basilica is one among those three. So if you are a Christian and you visit Chennai, it will be a good experience if you visit this place.

The church is situated next to San Thome Beach...walk around it to reach a fishermen's village and watch them fishing using traditional methods in early morning.
